Music4. Dr Fanny Waterman Dr Fanny Waterman was the daughter of Myer Waterman, a Russian Jew who had emigrated to Leeds to work as a jeweller. She became one of the country's leading private piano teachers and with the former Countess of Harewood, Marion Thorpe, founded the celebrated Leeds International Pianoforte Competition in 1961. This remains one of the world's leading competitions of its kind alongside Moscow and Warsaw.
5. Frances Mary Hefford Cocking As a school teacher in Huddersfield, Frances Cocking played an influential role in the development of music with several musical compositions to her credit.
6. Female Brass bands After the Second World War the birth of the instrumental teaching service and the formation of school bands led to the inclusion of an increasing number of female musicians in brass bands. By 2000 most West Yorkshire brass bands included ladies within their ranks and the composite band, the "All Star Girls of Brass" had broadcast their performances, recorded and appeared at high-profile public concerts.
