Music

2. Choral Singing

Yorkshire provides some outstanding examples of women pursuing successful careers in music. Choral singing and piano playing were probably the two pursuits most closely associated with women and for the talented few music offered a chance to build a career.

3. Mrs Susan Sunderland

Susan Sunderland the celebrated English soprano was a native of Brighouse and an early member of the Halifax Choral Society and the Huddersfield Choral Society. She later became a professionally-engaged soprano soloist for the latter until her retirement in 1864, winning renown as the "Yorkshire Queen of Song". The Mrs Sunderland Musical Competition was inaugurated in her honour in 1888 following the celebration of her golden wedding anniversary as a contest solely for solo singers and instrumentalists. Choral competitions were introduced in 1894, composition and elocution classes in 1916 and 1921. The winner of the senior elocution class in 1949 later became well known to television and theatre audiences as Thelma Barlow.
